The annual celebration of all things honey will kick off in two weeks as part of Honey Month, with the Honey Festival being one of the first events throughout May to promote the importance of Australian honeybees and their products.
The Honey Festival will take place at The House of Honey in Herne Hill on Sunday 7 May, and is expected to attract more than 3,000 visitors.
WAFarmers Bees Section President Leilani Leyland said the event had gained considerable popularity, and attracted beekeepers, industry representatives and considerable general public interest.
“Events such as the Honey Festival are great opportunities for beekeepers to educate the community on the importance of bees in the ecosystem and on food diversity, and the many valuable healing properties of honey,” she said.
“The general public is always excited to learn about beekeeping and honey and, as such, attendance at the event has steadily increased over the five years it has been running.
“In addition to free tastings, the latest industry information and products and the opportunity to sign up for an accredited course in beekeeping, attendees will understand and value the importance of bees as master pollinators and learn how important they are to our food diversity in Australia.”
Attendees are encouraged to submit their own honey for the honey judging competition and participate in the Honey Cake competition – contestants must make honey cupcakes with honey cream frosting a specific recipe, with the winner to be announced at 11.30am.
There will also be plenty of activities for younger visitors, with bee ‘waggle’ dance class at 2.30pm, a pollination tent and fun facts galore about bees and honey. Further event information email [email protected] or call (08) 9296 3635. For competition information, email [email protected].
